Academics & Targets

Academics
Math:

We had a wonderful week in second grade! In math the students spent time learning shape attributes. Some of the attributes that the class discussed are number of sides, vertices, side length, parallel sides, right angles, and symmetry. They made shape riddles and created a shape chatter pix. Check out SeeSaw to see those activities!

Science/SS:

In addition, the students participated in a science investigation. We read about the Earth's surface. They read about how there is more water on the Earth than land. They also read about how land areas can be covered with rocks, sand, or soil. After, we spent time creating our own globes. They used blue clay for the water and green clay for the land. Attached are pictures from this activity.

The class did a brochure swap in Social Studies this week. Each student presented their community brochure to another student. Pictures are posted to twitter from this event.

Literacy/Writing:

The class also started an opinion writing prompt on which Prairie School special was their favorite. These paragraphs are posted to SeeSaw. The students were encouraged to state their opinion in their topic sentence and come up with two big reasons why that special class was their favorite. They did great with their first opinion paragraph!

We are currently reading a story called John Chapman Planter and Pioneer. It is a story about how John Chapman became Johnny Appleseed. We practiced two strategies for finding the main topic and main idea during Daily Five. We looked for repeating words and the class did a "Stop and Jot." We also spent time finishing up our news reports. The class loved using the green screens and are excited to share these at conferences!
